There is a rising movement right now.

There’s a MLK quote that folks are saying at protests in the streets— “Riot is the voice of the unheard” but what is also important is the second part of that quote, “What is it that America is not hearing?” The vast majority of people are not being heard right now especially within the context of this election. Right now voter registration rates have plummeted in relation to the rates in the same months in 2016. Declines in voter registration rates have been as significant as 75% in some states. We have to ensure that the voice of our people, especially of our youngest people are heard now more than ever.

In the last election, less than half of college students made their voices heard by casting their ballots. This coupled with the rising movements and energy where many people including students’ are making it clear that their voices will not be silenced, demonstrates the concrete need for campuses to commit tangibly to supporting students’ voices to show students that wherever they are— their campus stands behind them and their voices.

Right now, across the country, people, organizations, and institutions are being called into question and into action. There is no longer any space for silent support, passive allyship, or words without action. As universities and colleges, institutions built to foster the growth, voice, and leadership of students,we know you can – and must – do more to support students registering and turning out in this year’s election.

This is why we are asking college and university Presidents to take the Generation Vote Pledge, making the commitment to ensuring that all students’ voices are heard and that all students’ have the access & opportunity to be heard and represented. Hundreds of Presidents have taken the pledge to go all-in for campus democracy,, and more than the pledge we need to take steps and plans for action. This Generation Vote pledge is about doing that.
